Things to remember when refining your spread...
OVERLAPPING COLORS: should be organic, not need to be perfect. The presses at the Center are not made for perfect registration, the offset can end up more than 1/8".
LARGE SOLID AREAS: large solid area will not print solid and will have a textured effect, you can work with lines or halftones to get the same shape, better ink coverage.
THIN, FLOATING LINES: I've gotten 0.25 to work, as long as it is not isolated (separate from each other imagery on the same plate/color) they should be at most about .05" from each other.
NO BAD TYPOGRAPHY: PLEASE remember your typography from Type 1, don't stretch, squish, torture, outline, use Motel type, etc.

Theme: Chose a memory of water (beach, river, ocean, pool, scuba diving, surfing, sailing, so on) where you felt completely at peace. Keeping in mind you are building a time capsule for the future: design a panel that portrays your moment that also integrates with the other artists' panels.

Beautiful strange is an apt description of what exquisite deity is all about. The 10 artists contributed literal and abstract representations of their personal deities by drawings, images, and text with the intention of creating an inspirational book that communicates the interconnectivity of people, cultures, and beliefs.

The artists that participated in exquisite deity are jarrod bryan, joey christensen, jorge coya, robert debusschere, brian hoffa, christian russell, liz samano, rachel severance, anthony trujillo and kevin yuen.

exquisite deity was handprinted by letterpress at the San Francisco Center for the Book under the direction of Melissa Kaup-Augustine. The book uses Pantone® inks 469, 202, and 4515 on Johannot mould made paper with a cover in Fabriano Murillo. exquisite deity was printed in a limited edition of 40, price $100.

Post-It is a collection of postcard art and designs on different social, environmental and humanitarian issues such as Jena 6, gay marriage, free Tibet, and saving the rain forest—to name a few.

Contained within an antique metal mailbox and composed on Fox River Paper, the artists' combined efforts visually represent facts, statistical information and the opinions of their topics.

The artists that participated in Post-It are jarrod bryan, joey christensen, jorge coya, robert debusschere, brian hoffa, christian russell, liz samano, rachel severance, anthony trujillo and kevin yuen.

The artists used traditional methods like hand-drawn illustrations, stencils, paintings, wood-block printings, collages and stitching. Each postcard is unique, original and personal, just like the artists that designed them.

uc2: Survival Biscuit

Survival Biscuit is a collection of visual expressions of our experiences, reactions, emotions and opinions surrounding the immediate crisis of global warming. Contained in a 1962 biscuit tin from a fallout shelter, the combined leaves operate as a new act for survival, illustrating a variety of underlying issues, providing visual activations, and an overall understanding of our current worldwide crisis.

Pulling from the environment and traditional artistic methods, each leaf is created with natural mediums to reflect the personal connection attained throughout the creative process. By exploring alternative methods, Survival Biscuit gives an authentic presentation using a variety of materials such as wood block printing, collage, stitching, hand-drawn illustrations, and painting on recycled paper from Fox River Paper. Each leaf of Survival Biscuit is unique.

21 artists have collectively compiled their personal experiences and illustrative interpretations of the heart and mind into a book. Although each artist’s expression of the human heart and mind are separate visual entities, the images unite on their individual page and throughout the book to create a strong aesthetic composition.

The artists that participated in heart&mind are sean bledsoe, christopher brizuela, susan corwyn, ashley devis, ruby anne galang, josiah gonzales, richard jonsson jr, juan maciel, adelina mendoza, mary muñoz, jongyeon na, dejon rodriguez, sara sanocki, mike shoys, justin silvera, raiel smith, mario sosa, tam tran, cassandra voors, william weber, and kerry flynn williams.

heart&mind was designed with digital illustrations and printed by historic Vandercook letterpress at the San Francisco Center for the Book under the direction of Melissa Kaup-Augustine. The book uses Pantone® inks 469, 549, and 583 on Johannot mould made paper with a wrap in Fabriano Murillo. heart&mind was printed in a limited edition of 65, price $150.

The artists of spirituality collectively compiled their experiences with spirituality into a book to communicate three main ideas: spirituality is open to many unique interpretations, individuals generally refrain from speaking their personal beliefs in everyday conversation, and when these separate thoughts are cooperatively presented as a whole they create an entirely unique and balanced interpretation on their own.

The artists that participated spirituality are lili cao, djördge cortez, mea fong, ofelia gallegos, kenneth liu, robert louthan, aleksandra marchenko, delbarr navai, desiree peel, marshall perin, elizabeth praisewater, elina rubuliak, will warriner, and katelin yee.

spirituality was designed with traditional and digital type and printed by historic Vandercook letterpress at the San Francisco Center for the Book under the direction of Melissa Kaup-Augustine. The book is in Pantone® inks 123, 1805, and 469 on Johannot mould made paper with a Fabriano Murillo wrap. spirituality was printed in a limited edition of 60, price $140.

uc1: Pandora's Box

The taboo of war is entirely dependent on an individual's point of view. Whether we view war as an honorable necessity or a deplorable act of violence, our consideration of war positions us to decide what actions of government, military, or citizens are acceptable or forbidden. These differences in principals form fundamental divides through our culture, but they also generate a place for dialogue.

Pandora's Box is a collection of expressions of our experiences, reactions, emotions and opinions of war as visual statements. Although unbound, the individual leaves are assembled (in an antique ammunitions case) to create a unified piece. Unlike the former inhabitants of the case, each leaf is a powerful individual message. The leaves discuss several themes in regards to war: courage, honor, protest, hope, terrorism and war speeches and rhetoric.

In a motion to return to our artistic talents and skills, none of the leaves were created using direct printing from a digital source. Instead we explored methods that involved creating our message by hand, such as collage, drawn illustrations, image transfers, painting, stamp impressions, etching and hand lettering. Each leaf is unique.
